At Personal MBA Coach, we recognize that this is an especially stressful time for international applicants aspiring to pursue an MBA in the United States. Between shifting policies, sensational headlines, and growing uncertainty, potential MBA applicants might find themselves quickly overwhelmed. But despite the noise, Personal MBA Coach would like to offer some clarity, perspective, and reassurance to international (and all) MBA applicants.
Why Now Is Still a Good Time to Pursue an MBA
We continue to believe that the 2025-2026 MBA application cycle is a strong time to pursue an MBA. In fact, we recently published a new article outlining why NOW may be a particularly smart moment to invest in your education and career. From shifting global job markets to increased employer demand for adaptable, analytical leaders, an MBA remains one of the best ways to accelerate professional growth long term.
International Students Are—and Always Have Been—Essential to MBA Programs
While there is understandable concern in the international community, it is important to remember that a large percentage of MBA students at top programs—and historically, close to half of Personal MBA Coach’s clients—are international. Looking at profiles for the class of 2026, international students at Columbia Business School, Stanford GSB, Harvard and Wharton represented 46%, 39%, 35% and 31%, respectively. MBA programs rely on international voices to foster the diversity, innovation, and global mindset that define top business schools.
Schools continue to show strong support for international applicants, and we do not expect that to change. Last week Alan M. Garber, President of Harvard University, shared this message:
For those international students and scholars affected by yesterday’s action, know that you are vital members of our community. You are our classmates and friends, our colleagues and mentors, our partners in the work of this great institution. … We will support you as we do our utmost to ensure that Harvard remains open to the world.
Further, Nick Anderson, Vice President at the American Council on Education, shared on LinkedIn a few days ago:
My heart and head hurt at what is happening to educational dreams of international students, whether born in China or elsewhere, whether enrolled at Harvard University or somewhere else. So much is made of the tuition revenue they generate that we somehow seem to glide past the ideals that their very presence in the United States represents. We must not overlook that. The truth is, we need more U.S. students studying abroad, and we need fully open doors to international students to bring their talent and vision and ambition to us.
Personal MBA Coach’s Take on Legal Protections and Visa Outlook
Personal MBA Coach is confident that schools and educational organizations will continue to do everything in their power, including seeking legal support to ensure that the doors remain open for law-abiding international students.
Over the years, we have seen numerous court interventions uphold the rights of international students, protecting access to study and work opportunities in the U.S. While immigration processes may feel unpredictable at times, based on current trends and historical precedent, we would expect visa processing to resume for international students.
Build a Balanced School List
All that being said, Personal MBA Coach almost ALWAYS recommends that our applicants build a well-rounded school list to protect against uncertainty—whether related to admissions chances, location preferences, or now, government policy changes.
For international applicants who are particularly concerned about U.S. visa policies, this likely means adding an MBA program (or two) in Europe to their MBA school list.
Fortunately, there are many outstanding international MBA programs worth considering. We encourage candidates to look into top global programs such as London Business School or INSEAD. Check out this recent blog to find out more about the top international MBA programs.
Final Thoughts
While the current landscape presents challenges, it also offers opportunities for growth and resilience. International students continue to be a vital part of MBA programs, and schools are actively supporting their journeys. By staying informed, seeking guidance, and considering a diverse range of programs, you can navigate this period with confidence.
