2026-2027 Michigan Ross MBA Application Essays

  • Part 1: Career Aspirations: What is your short-term career goal, and how do you plan to leverage the Ross MBA and its program offerings in your first role after graduation? Please be specific and answer both parts of this question. (300 words)

Personal MBA Coach’s Tips

Michigan Ross has followed the trend we have seen this year of doubling down on the role of MBA goals in the application. An increasing number of top MBA programs have at least one central goals essay (Kellogg, Wharton, NYU Stern and Berkeley Haas also lead with a goals essay this year).

While Ross asked applicants to discuss MBA goals last year, the question was a bit more complicated and focused on the school’s action learning. This year, Ross has taken a very straightforward approach.

With only 300 words for this two-part essay, Personal MBA Coach advises applicants to be very straightforward when citing their short-term goal. For more on how to write a goal statement, check out this blog.

Once you have clearly stated your short-term career goal, you want to explain where Ross fits in. Explain why Ross is a good fit and detail how a Ross MBA will prepare you to succeed in the short-term and what skill gaps will Ross help you to close.

As with any “why MBA” essay, you want to be specific, focusing on a few specific aspects of Ross’s curriculum, cultures and/or offerings that attracted you to the program. While not explicitly asked this year, applicants may want to think about discussing the school’s action-based learning opportunities and how they will benefit them. The more you can show Ross you have done your research and given substantial thought to why the school is a good fit for you, the better!

  • Part 2: Impact and Growth.
Michigan Ross is proud to support a community of leaders and impact makers who value growth. As a future member of this community, we want to know more about who you are and what drives you. Choose 1 of the following prompts to tell us more about what makes you stand out beyond your academic and work experience. List the prompt you are answering at the top of your essay. (200 words)

    • Think of a time something important did not go as planned. What did you do next?
    • What is something you worked on for an extended period of time (over 6 months) that ultimately resulted in a positive outcome? What kept you committed?
    • Share an example of a specific situation when your actions created a positive impact on your community or an individual.

Personal MBA Coach’s Tips

Although Michigan Ross has stayed true to its multiple-choice format for the personal story question, the choice has been narrowed down to only three options instead of four.

There is no best prompt so choose the one that allows you to tell your strongest story. Pick the option that best demonstrates the positive impact you have had while also showing Ross what is most important to you. As you brainstorm, think about your personal story and what truly sets you apart from other applicants. The best essays are not necessarily about the biggest accomplishments, but rather the experiences that provide the clearest window into who you are and what guides your decisions and actions.

If you have a compelling example of failure and growth that also highlights your impact on others, that can work particularly well. Remember, business school is a time for growth, and demonstrating both self-awareness and an openness to continued improvement can leave a strong impression on the admissions committee. At the same time, make sure your essay clearly shows what you learned from the experience and how those lessons continue to shape the way you lead, collaborate, and approach challenges today.

Regardless of the option you select, remember you have only 200 words so specificity is key. Get to the point as quickly as possible and avoid generalities. Be wary of long-winded or difficult to follow stories here as well.
Finally, option 3 is a great choice for applicants for whom community is particularly important.

Community has become a popular essay topic in recent years and both Yale SOM and HBS also include community essays in their applications. Check out our essay guidance for Yale SOM and HBS for more tips on how to think about community essays.

  • Optional Statement: Is there something in your resume or application that could use some explanation? You might want to discuss the completion of supplemental coursework, employment gaps, academic issues, etc. Feel free to use bullet points where appropriate.

The optional Michigan Ross essay should only be answered by those with extenuating circumstances. Read more on our approach to optional essays.
